Eochaid Welsh Ponies and Cobs

Eochaid Acres is the adventure in progress of Dierdre and Garrett towards sustainability and homegrown life. While we are learning as we go, we are enjoying the challenge. Keep an eye on the website to see as we grow our farm and expand what we are capable of.

Eochaid Welsh Ponies and Cobs is a extension of Eochaid Acres with the goal of producing and promoting the Welsh Breeds with a focus on the fabulous Welsh Pony of Cob Type (Section C). The rarest section of the Welsh Pony family of breeds, we think that they are the most versatile and deserve greater recognition. The expansion from under saddle and driving performance into the breeding world grew from realising that Welsh Cs could use promotion among the horse sports. Ponies carrying the Eochaid prefix will be hitting several areas of the horse world soon.

The name Eochaid comes from an old Irish (Gaelic) word "Eoch" or "Ech" meaning horse. Eochaid was a name given the the master or lord of horses. Along with the historical significance, the choice of Eochaid has to do with how it is pronounced. A very loose pronunciation would be "yE/O-kHay" (click button below for pronunciation). When we first started the farm, Garrett and I had a hard time settling on a farm name, so our family started referring to us as the O'Heys (a mash up of our last names). So when searching for an appropriate descriptor for our home, it seemed fitting that a name that suited our equestrian life style would be Anglicized from Eochaid to O'Hey.
